Voila: The water lilies at Ziros and Mesa Apidi

Ziros is located approximately 4km from Handras. It is an amphitheatrical village with something quite remarkable to showcase in the latest years: a small pond full of water lilies. A local resident decided to break the monotony of the landscape by planting the popular aquatic flower which has found favourable conditions to multiply and create an idyllic scenery. The pond in Ziros is enclosed and ducks swimm among the flowers.

Water lilies were also planted in a smaller pond in the nearby village of Mesa Apidi, as well as other locations with an abundance of water. As a result, a picturesque view has been created that nobody would expect to find among the rocky villages of Sitia.

Water lilies are considered to be the most beautiful of all the aquatic flowers and were often planted in palace gardens and big parks. They have roots that anchor the plant deep in the mud of shallow waters and even though they seem delicate, they are quite resilient, able to thrive in almost any environment as long as there is water.
