White Dry Wine

The Cretan variety Dafní was saved from extinction by the Lyrarakis family, when it was planted in the "Psarades" vineyard at 480m. altitude in the early '90s. Its name derives from the laurel (bay leaf) plant, “Dáfni” in Greek, due to its aromatic resemblance. A wine with a distinctive herbal character, refreshing mouthfeel and intense aftertaste, in a citrus fruit background.

Nikos Somarakis has been part of our team since 2007, when he first joined in as an oenology student. 15 years later, he is now our viticulturist and vineyard manager.

Winemaking

Skin contact for 3 hours. 10% of the juice came from early vintage grapes in order to balance the acidity and enhance the herbal character. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tank between 17-18°C and then the final blend matured on lees for a period of 4 months, gaining depth of flavour.

Tasting Note & Food Pairing

Bright yellow colour. Aromas of herbs such as bay leaf and rosemary with notes of citrus fruit, wet earth and a hint of ginger. Balanced and savory with vibrant acidity and an intense aromatic aftertaste.

Pair with fried small fish, seafood like cuttlefish with spinach, white meat, pulses and pies with greens and aromatic herbs. Serve at 10°C.

Culture

Psarades vineyard is located in Alagni, a village in the Archanes- Asterousia Municipality, Heraklion Prefecture. Alagni has become an attraction for travelers because of the Lyrarakis winery, but there are many other things a visitor can explore.  The Minoan palace of Galatas, medieval wine presses, centuries-old windmills, Venetian churches compose the history of Alagni, which welcomes its guests who wish to relax under the plane tree on the main square or enjoy the local wines amidst the vineyard of Psarades.
