Archanes: The wine presses in Vathipetro and Katalagari

Close to the Minoan Villa of Vathipetro, you may find on a footpath a wine press carved on rock. Its vat is now destroyed probably due to the path’s construction. Author and geologist Stelios Manolioudis cites that the cutting of the press is not diligent probably because there were no metal tools available to its constructors. If this statement is true, it means that the construction of the wine press dates between the Minoan and the Iron age.

What is interesting is that a little further down, south of Katalagari, lies one of biggest complexes of wine presses carved on rock. The complex consists of at least five presses and ten wine vats, where the must was collected through outpouring channels. The age of the complex cannot be determined with certainty. It was definitely in use during the Venetian era. Parts of wine jars that were found in the area bear testament to that, but an older construction cannot be ruled out. Directly opposite from the presses, you may see the ruins of the fortress of Paliochora on the Kastellos hill.
