Archanes: Castello del Corner

The remains of  Castello  del Corner or fort of Paleochora are located on the hill Kastelos south of the village Katalagari, province Pediada, Heraklion Prefecture. The fortress was used as residence of the local ruler from the Venetian family of Cornaro (Corner); he was in control of all the farming activities of the area, of which the most important was viticulture, hence the large number of wine presses. Relating to that, a folk tale says that the ruler, when approached by another ruler’s troops, threatened that he would drown them in wine if they attacked.
