Chandras Museum

The folklore museum of Chandras in Sitia is a treasure chest filled with artifacts of everyday life from previous decades. It is a small museum, housed in a restored traditional residence that reconstructs an accurate representation of how life used to be in this remote part of Crete. Chandras was fully self-sufficient in the past. Locals used to cultivate flax, cotton, silk and everything else they needed in small family farms. Some of the tools they used for harvesting and processing were donated to the museum by their descendants, together with other obsolete items of everyday life.

In the “Cretan household” as the entrance sign states, you may see an old loom with handcrafted textiles and traditional pieces of apparel, as well as undergarments with handwoven lace and elaborate details on the lavishly made bed. In the “kitchen” area, among antique utensils and decorative handiwork, there is the old fireside that served as both a heating device and a cooking hotplate. A trap for martens and mice stands out because of its ingenuity. The museum’s collection is complete with the wooden tools that were used for cotton and flax processing.
