Amari: Gious Kampos and Tulipa Doerfleri

The Gious Kampos Plateau is located between Spili and Gerakari in Rethymnon and took its name from the goddess of Dawn, Io. According to Greek Mythology, every dawn Io paved the way for the Sun God. She put on her head a wreath made out of flowers supplied by birds and got on her four-horse chariot, throwing flowers on the Earth. With this image in mind, one can easily understand the magic that Gious Kampos radiates with its numerous red endemic tulips of the species Tulipa Doerfleri. In the months of April and May, the plateau is filled with these amazing tulips, as well as visitors and botanists who come to admire them up close.

Botanists John Fielding and Nicholas Turland have clarified that this species is endemic and not related to the Orphanidea Tulip found in the rest of Greece and Western Turkey. In the past, the populations of Tulipa Doerfleri were decreasing, as visitors used to cut the flowers to sell or plant them in their homes. Then, in 1981, Tulipa Doerfleri was declared a protected species by Presidential Decree. Gious Kampos is also home to other flowers, such as rare and less rare orchids, with large populations that create beautiful images.
