Amari: Digenis waterfall on Mount Kedros

One of the most impressive waterfalls in Crete is Digenis “Rechtra” which is formed on Mount Kedros, near the village of Platanes in Amari, Rethymnon. In fact, it consists of at least two waterfalls, over 35 meters tall, and many smaller ones that emerge from the opening of the canyon and flow rapidly across a long distance.

It takes about an hour to reach the waterfall by climbing a rather uphill terrain. Although the path is not clear in some places, a stone channel, built by the locals to send water to their crops, will guide you. The highest part of the waterfall, at Apano Platanes, can be reached only by technical means and people with relevant experience. This does not mean that those who reach the lower part of the waterfall will not enjoy the view: enormous volumes of water fall into this spot from a great height. As we descend, water flow slows down, while at times the waterfall breaks in two or embraces large rocks. The descent is more difficult since in places there are the so-called "sares" with unstable rocks and there is no path at all.
