The tradition of blessing the grapes on the 6th of August

On August 6th, when the transfiguration of Jesus Christ is celebrated, all around the wine making regions of Crete, including Alagni, the locals honor the ancient tradition of grape blessing. During that custom, the local growers bring the first fruit of their vintage, the first grapes to ripen, to church to be offered and blessed. The grapes are offered as a thanksgiving to the Creator and then blessed by the priest for a good harvest to follow. After the ceremony, the grapes are handed out to the attendants along with the traditional holy bread. The custom dates back to ancient pre-Chistian times, when growers used to offer the fruits and cereals of their land to their own Gods as offerings for fertility, healthy crops and good weather. Nowadays, the tradition is mostly commemorated around the vineyard regions of Crete. Other, similar customs for olive oil, wine, cereals and other goods used to be celebrated in Crete as well.
