Armi: Name origin

Armi means hill in the Cretan dialect. It is a toponym that is found in many areas in mountainous Crete. The linguist Georgios Hatzidakis clearly attributes to the toponym "Armi" the meaning of hill and so does Marinos Idomeneos in his “Cretan Glossary”. In the case of the "Armi" vineyard in the administrative boundaries of Douli, it is easy to see that there is a hill there cultivated with vines. The same location is also referred to by the locals as "Yiannis Melisses". Apparently in the past a person called Yiannis kept his beehives on this hill, but no further information has survived.
