Panorama's Venetian past

Panorama, as its name suggests, is a beautiful settlement of Heraklion with a panoramic view, between the villages of Stironas and Amourgeles. The first mention of the settlement can be found in the Venetian censuses of 1577 and 1583. The Venetian presence in the area is also confirmed by the coat of arms of a Venetian family on the magnificent portico of the small church of Agios Fanourios. There are two theories about this: one tells us that the coat of arms belongs to the Venetian "Abramo" generation and the other to the "Basadona" family. This later one is considered more probable. Member of this family was Luca Basadona, who was captain-general in Khandaka. A similar coat of arms of the Basadona family had been placed on the walls of Heraklion, on the occasion of fortification works in the year 1575. Apparently, members of this family had been given lands as fiefdoms, and Panorama was among them. At the beginning of the 20th century, Italian archaeologist Giuseppe Gerola visited Panorama and photographed the temple with its door and coat of arms, referring to the church with the name Agios Georgios.
