Amourgeles settlement

Amourgeles, which belongs to the municipality of Minoa Pediados, is built on the eastern side of the "Amygdalokefala" hill. We do not have an exact picture of the origin of its name. According to one version, it comes from the word "mourgela", which means laziness, and the prefix for opposite -a-, thus connoting that its inhabitants are hardworking and not lazy.

It is certain that Amourgeles was inhabited during the Venetian rule, as we find mentions of the settlement in a document from 1370 and indeed as part of Andrea Cornario's estate. The churches of Saint George and Saint Anthony and parts of the churches of Saints Anargyri, Virgin Mary and Saint Paraskevi are preserved from the Venetian rule. There was also a church dedicated to the patron saint of the Venetians, Mark, at the base of which a newer church has been built.

Both Amourgeles and the nearby Panorama have been, through time, vine villages, with large and fertile vineyards. At a distance of one kilometer south of Amourgeles, a dam has been constructed that covers the irrigation needs of the area and functions as a great habitat, hosting a multitude of birds.
