Amourgeles Dam

The Amourgeles dam was built in the period 2001-2005. Covering an area ofapproximately 137 acres, it gathers the waters of the Amourgeles stream and three other streams, which run seasonally. During rainfall, it can be filled with over a million cubic meters of water, of which approximately 900,000 cubic meters are used to irrigate 9,000 acres of land in the wider area. This fact opened the way for the cultivation of horticultural crops, encouraging many young people to remain in their birthplace and additionally enhance their income from the extensive viticulture and olive cultivation.

In addition to its use in the agricultural sector, the dam functions, together with its lake, as an important wetland. The Natural History Museum of the University of Crete, which was involved in its construction, initially reinforced it with fish populations, which today have multiplied. At the same time, birds that winter in the area found favorable living conditions here, while migratory species also have a significant presence. In its surrounding area, structures have been built so that the visitor can sit and observe the birdlife of the artificial lake. Paths, around the dam, offer beautiful sightseeing experiences, placing Amourgeles on the map of areas of ecotourism interest.
