Mandilari Plakoura 2018

Single Area

Red Dry Wine

The rare low-yield Plakoura vineyard is a premier cru slope at 500m. altitude, with sandy, stony soil. The head-trained pruning in combination with the north-east exposure of the vineyard and plenty of sunshine, ensures that the grapes reach optimum ripeness at the time of harvest. Very thorough cultivation helps us achieve extremely low yields, succeeding in vinificating a very concentrated wine with a deep red colour and an excellent structure, which will age for a long time.

Fermentation with selected yeasts at temperatures between 25° and 28°C. The wine has aged for 14 months in a new oak tank (34%) and re-used French (35%) and Αmerican (31%) oak barrels.

Culture

Plakoura vineyard is very close to Karkadiotissa, a mountain village in Heraklion with a history that goes back at least to the 2nd Byzantine period. Its inhabitants managed to turn its mountainous character into an advantage by systematically engaging in animal husbandry and agriculture.  Not far from Karkadiotissa we find the prosperous monastery of Agios Georgios Epanosifis and the deserted monastery of Astratigos. The plague-ruined settlement of Agalantes, located in the same area, is also of interest.
