Single Area

Red Dry Wine

"Plakoura" vineyard is situated on a premier cru slope with sandy, stony soil at 500m altitude. Head-trained pruning, combined with north-east exposure and ample sunshine, ensures grapes reach optimal ripeness at harvest. Our meticulous cultivation practices result in extremely low yields, producing a concentrated wine with deep red color, excellent structure and long aging potential.

Green harvest in August. The fruit was handpicked on September 17 and 18 and was destemmed and crushed into inox fermenter Ganimides that uses CO2 (naturally produced or added) for pigeages. Fermentation maceration took place at temperatures below 27° for 10 days to avoid over extraction. The wine aged for almost 2,5 years in re-used French (61%) and Αmerican (39%) oak barrels of 225lt and 300lt.

Culture

Plakoura vineyard is very close to Karkadiotissa, a mountain village in Heraklion with a history that goes back at least to the 2nd Byzantine period. Its inhabitants managed to turn its mountainous character into an advantage by systematically engaging in animal husbandry and agriculture.  Not far from Karkadiotissa we find the prosperous monastery of Agios Georgios Epanosifis and the deserted monastery of Astratigos. The plague-ruined settlement of Agalantes, located in the same area, is also of interest.
